Petroleum geochemistry is applied in the oil exploration industry in order to better evaluate the risks associated with exploring for oil and gas. Geochemistry can help determine the timing of oil generation and migration, and correlate oils with source rocks. Petroleum geochemistry allows for the evaluation of lateral and vertical reservoir continuity, reservoir filling, as well as identification of contaminants and tar mats.
