When my husband and I recently decided to finally move out of our "starter home" and into one that was a bit larger to fit our growing family, I was happy to have more space. However, our starter home had a hardwired security system that I didn't fully appreciate until we moved. Do to the stress of moving and everything on our "to do" list, we didn't look into a new security system right away. I have been fascinated by unconventional people for as long as I can remember. I was raised in a middle class suburban neighborhood where my family stood out as eccentrics. We were the only secular family on the block, and my parents encouraged us to run wild, play hard, and reject authority. My father told captivating stories about his unusual upbringing, many of which revolved around his mother, a paranoid schizophrenic, and his father, a merchant marine with severe PTSD. As I got older, I became curious about other people that lived unorthodox lifestyles. Having seen the work of Mary Ellen Mark and Diane Arbus, I knew that the camera could grant permission into the lives of complete strangers. In 2003, I moved to San Francisco, CA to study photography at The San Francisco Art Institute. After completing my BFA, I moved back to my home town San Diego, with my now husband Tahan, in tow. We currently reside in La Mesa, CA where I work full time as a photographer and am finishing my MFA through the Low Residency program at The San Francisco Art Institute. We are expecting our first child together this Christmas, 2015.

Since May 2015 the Babel-University project website has been down. Since then I have received a lot of emails from project supporters , So I've set up this page to provide some answers. What happened? The short answer is that my savings account went dry and I couldn't afford to keep the server up and running. The longer answer starts in March of 2013, when my wife and I made the decision to move back to the United States. As many of you may know, My wife is a Japanese national and we have two sons. Since both our boys were born in Japan, we wanted to return to the United States for a few years so that they could experience western culture. So we started my wife's visa application and began saving for our trip back to the states. Since my position at the Board of Education was based on an annual contract and we intended to move back to the U.S. mid 2014, I had to resign from my position in March of that year. Unfortunately the visa application process took far longer and cost far more than we had anticipated (15 months and $6000 USD to be exact). Although in March of 2015, we'd made it to the last stage of the visa application process, we were informed that since my income for the last three years was location dependent, unless I could show that I had more than $75,000 USD in savings, they couldn't approve my wife's visa. Since we'd been living off of our savings since my resignation and $75,000 was more than three times my annual income as a teacher, we abandoned our plans and hunkered down here in Japan. I had hoped that the Babel-University project would be able to sustain enough sales to pay for the dedicated server on which it was running. Due to security issues related to shared hosting, one of the requirements to be included in the Joomla Extensions Directory (JED) is that you host your download site on a dedicated server. However in January when I announced the development of Babel-U-Exams 2.0, sales flat lined and in May, I had to cancel my server subscription. Is the project dead? Although the Babel-University site is offline and I can't offer download access to the extension at the moment, I would like to revive the project, but before I can do that, I need to get back on my feet and figure out how to make it sustainable. I'm using Babel-U-Extension, what should I do now? If you are currently running a live site using Babel-U-Extensions, then you have a few options. Option One: Migrate The first option is to migrate to an alternative solution. I know there are several other extensions that offer similar functionality, so finding an alternative shouldn't be difficult. However migrating the database to a different extension isn't going to be easy. You'll need to either have a very strong mastery of SQL or hire a database administrator to handle the migration process. Option Two: Start Over If you don't mind losing the exam data you have, then you can always start over with an alternative extension. This is the most cost effective option, but it does require that you manually import exams and questions into whatever extension you choose. Option Three: Maintain it in-house The third option is to maintain the system in-house. I've worked very hard to insure that the code in all Babel-U-Extensions is clean, stable and well documented. So any proficient PHP developer that has experience with the Joomla CMS should be able work with the code. Option Four: Hire me (Highly Recommended) Truthfully I'm between a rock and a hard spot at the moment. The Babel-University project was how I established my credibility as a web developer, so since the site went down, my freelance income is hit and miss. Although I've been looking for something here in Japan, living in the boondocks limits the opportunities I have. Street Photography is about how you capture what’s around you, how confident you are as a person, how you handle peoples reactions when or after you take their photo. I know it seems scary but just go for it, but not everybody feels confident in public with a camera and taking pictures of people, you need basic knowledge, it’s like laying a foundation before we build a house, it's what makes it strong. Street Photography is not everyone's cup of tea, best to do it for yourself, fill your curiosity. You don’t have to be a serious Street Photographer, as long this genre makes you get up and get out, that’s great. I believe we only gain something from focussing on what we do and keep on trying. I never stop learning when doing Street, everything about it fascinates me, from the people, shadows, shapes, to en empty road. Since I started Street photography, I never get bored. I do Street everywhere, weekends, during holidays, days out with friends, in good weather or bad weather, in broad daylight or at night. The Street is available to everyone who’s willing to do it, 24/7. I started my workshops early in 2017, it’s my great pleasure to introduce Street Photography to others and keep motivating them afterwards. I am always pleased to discover that many of my workshop attendees actually have the skills and understanding but need advice and demonstrations to begin with. I regularly see my workshop attendees doing well after workshops, they start “seeing things” which is the hardest part in Street photography. They gain the confidence to go out and the most important thing is they enjoy it, they feel that Street Photography gives them something to look forward, to go outside and practice. I think that’s wonderful. During the workshops I demonstrate my skills by showing some of my images that I have taken over many years, I point out good subjects that I spot on the Street and give them the explanation and of course I make sure my attendees doing a lot of practising to gain their confidence. My advice to beginners is: Go out, make lots of mistakes and importantly, enjoy it!

I am a lover of living intentionally, experiential learning, and global thinking. An academic interdisciplinarian, I have degrees in Human Biology, Social Work, Ethics, Spanish Language, and recently a Master Degree in Global Public Health. I fell in love with photography at age 15 when I got my first SLR camera for Christmas back in 1983. I wanted to be a National Geographic photographer but photography school was too expensive so I never pursued it professionally. In my 20's, I didn't have time to do much photography due to... well, life. At around age 32 I decided I wanted to be happy, finally, and I wanted to take control of my life instead of being controlled by my job. So I started getting back into my photography and practicing and shooting and reading everything I could get my hands on and teaching myself how to be a better photographer. So at age 34 I started my photography business. This was in 2002 about 6 months after 9/11. Probably not the best time to start a business, but for me it was now or never. It was the best decision I have ever made in my life! I put everything I had into it with the attitude that "I will make this happen!" Failure was not an option. To my surprise... three years later, I was shooting 50 weddings a year. The best part... I am happy! I love what I do, I love my life... What could be better than that? About My Photography I don't like to label my style of photography. I just go with what I am feeling from the bride and groom and what I am feeling from the wedding location. The light, the colors, the textures all play a part in how I shoot. I bring a relaxed, fun and confident attitude to my shoots. I get told by my clients that I am a joy to work with and I make them feel very comfortable in front of the camera. I get people at my weddings telling me, "Dude, your an awesome photographer!" My Story and How I Started My name is Jason R. Samy. I’ve been taking pictures as long as I can remember, but I got my first experience with a 35mm SLR in my early adult life. Over time I converted to digital and I haven't ever looked back. My portfolio displays many styles of photography that I’ve learned over the years and I continue to expedient with different techniques. I started off shooting anything in front of me, but ask anyone who knows me; I’m rarely without my camera. Thank you for visiting my website! My love for photography began as a child. I remember going to the National Museum of the Air Force when I was 9 or 10 years old. I spent every penny I had buying and shooting all the rolls of 110 film I could get my hands on. It took me weeks to save up enough to get them all developed (aahhh digital). I found the pictures again a few years ago. The pictures were nothing spectacular, but I'll never forget the rush I got taking them. Jump ahead to high school where I took my first photography class and learned about exposure, composure, and developing. After that I got away from serious photography until just a few years back. My father got a fancy new camera, a Nikon D90, and I had to have one too. I tried out a lot of lower grade equipment before learning the reasons why the pro grade stuff cost soooo much. There really is a huge difference in what you can do with it. But then I hit another wall. Even though my gear was good, I couldn't get all the shots I was trying for. My dad was having similar issues and we discovered a local photography school, Light Photographic Workshops. And the rest, as they say, is history. I started my professional photographic journey as a videographer at CNN and then at C-SPAN in the early days of the cable industry. At C-SPAN I was one of 7 employees, located in a small make shift studio located in a business building in Alexandria, VA just outside of the District of Columbia. It was at C-SPAN where I created video wallpaper. The purpose, It acted as fill between programming. We would run continuous clips of slowly moving video that I shot panning left to right or right to left and up and down and pulling slowly away (my small contribution to cinema verite on cable) from various Federal buildings and other notable architecture found throughout our Nation's Capital. These clips lasted from between :10 to :30 minutes and I edited them in away that would include many, many of our national treasures. I picked up on film in 1967 when I bought an inexpensive plastic 35mm/125speed film camera for a Cub Scout activity. Fast Forward in 1984 my purchase through JC Penny's of a Canon AE-1 35mm and I never looked back and now I have a Canon Rebel Xti EOS. Very simple stuff actually. I take into consideration the following when I shoot. (1) time of day (2) composition (3) weather conditions (4) Physical position And another consideration now that digital is for many the go to medium...take a lot of shots. However, It's still an organic learning experience as I am discovering the beauty of our planet almost daily through my travels in Northern California and beyond. As you view my images you’ll find out a lot about me. For instance, I see natural landscapes and the creatures that call them home as being at the same time grand works of art and also places for renewal, connection and education. It’s probably also apparent that I love to travel. The world is a big, beautiful and fascinating place, and my travel images aim to show it in all its glory. Photographing people and their cultures is one big reason I travel, and I hope my images tell you something about what makes all of us unique, along with all that we share. In short, despite all my photographs of nature and landscape, I am also a photographer of people, especially in those candid moments: with family or friends, with their pets, or simply alone. I’m very serious about photography as art, as a way to communicate what is more difficult (even impossible) to say with words. I don't tend to shoot popular subjects or incorporate trendy looks into my images. My influences from without are as numerous and varied as the whole world is. Influences from within include my past careers as an earth scientist and also a teacher. Both continue to inform my photography. For example my landscape images often highlight aspects of the region’s geologic history. My strong affinity for nature and animals of all kinds is a major influence as well. Global travel has given me a keen awareness of human impacts on the environment. We are forever connected after all - to the earth which gives us everything, and to each other. I am a mother, a wife, and a photographer... in that order. ;) I love my family first and foremost. I am a jack of many trades, I love creating, everything - from beautiful images, to costumes, to yummy foods. I love my craft closet, (which is full of stuff I can use to make things for you session that will make it that much more interesting) I love my costume and prop collection, I love thrift stores and flea markets, and I love a good sale anywhere. I enjoy reading good long books as well as writing, (although life has seemed to push that pastime to the side for the most part) and I rarely ever watch TV. I enjoy the outdoors and sports, and when I get old I will be be an avid traveler. ;) The sky amazes me and I have recently began taking random photos of it (awesome for overlays)...., I would love to have a second house at the ocean. I have an obsession with dying my hair random colors dependent upon my mood, and lately am rarely seen without a bandana tied around my head. If asked about my favorite color, I would have to say that I love them all (which is reflected throughout the walls of my home) yet I always gravitate toward things that are black. I am inspired in one way or another by everything that I have ever seen or experienced. (good, bad, and ugly) I like to think that I am a very intelligent person, I have an extremely sarcastic sense of humor at times, and I truly enjoy people. I have a very good sense of style, although my clothing choices for myself may not always reflect that as I am often in a tank top and jeans. (That said, you will never catch me dead in "mom" jeans) I drive too fast, and love music....all genres, like in a "My name is Amanda and I must be schizophrenic due to my playlist" kind of way.... I am not a "professionally trained photographer" so I can show you no credentials aside from my portfolio, as I am completely self taught and expand on my creativity and knowledge whenever possible. I suppose we can call me an extremely passionate artist of the lens, eager to capture and create some fantastic images for you. We are each an unique work of art, I am here to make sure your portraits reflect just that. I can produce a perfectly beautiful image of you sooc (straight out of camera), although rarely will I ever be satisfied with leaving it at that. I would like to consider myself extremely versatile in the creativity department. I love to do themed shoots, and can create costumes as well as other items necessary to pull them off. I have an eye for location, and love and appreciate natural light and texture. I am slightly "edgy", and love to think outside of the box. While there is nothing "conservative" about my taste or personality, I am able to mold my creative juices to suit the situation. SHORT BIO: When I was in second grade, my teacher told me I could draw as I tried to recreate the animals from the African continent from a Disney movie I had seen that weekend with pencil and color crayons. Until that time, we colored inside the lines. The creative gene sparked an interest in photography. I discovered that you could make memories permanent with film if only with a Brownie Starflash in black and white. A few classes in college and independent study have encouraged me to use the camera to "see" the world in my unique way. My passion...is to capture expressions and emotion in my photographs. I have been fascinated with photography since I was in grade school. I was always the one with the camera, getting great action and group shots. I never went anywhere without my camera and, everyone has ALWAYS depended on me to capture the memories of every event. Through the years, I have long considered photography as just simply an enthusiastic hobby, however, it became more intensified upon the birth of my child. Now, I never put the camera down. It wasn't until 8 years ago when the company I worked for, for 22 years, sold. Everyone told me that this was the time for me to pursue my dreams, and now I am. I started shooting weddings and quickly found out how much I love taking candids and getting people's expressions. Most of the time, I don't want my subjects to pose. I love to capture them in the moment. I have recently been shooting local sport tournaments and can I tell you how awesome action photography is for me. I was recently told by a mom that it is amazing how I capture the personality of a child as if I've photgraphed them for years, when in fact I just meet them. That is why I love to do what I do. I am a perfectionist in everything that I do. My goal is to be at the right place at the right time and to get that hard to get shot. I want to see excitement and joy in people's faces when they see the pictures that I have taken of their families and friends.
