Happy Valentine's Day!! When you become a mom, Valentine's Day takes on a whole other meaning. Suddenly, there is more than just one love in your life. And it is your job to honor that love. How to honor your little one on Valentine's Day? Well, now, that truly is the question. For years I would start the day off for my boys with a special breakfast. When they came running to the breakfast table, they would find a heart-shaped box of chocolates and a gift at their place setting. The gift was always jammie themed – a new pair of pajamas, slippers, a new blanket or a new stuffed animal. Other than baking heart-shaped cookies, and occasionally a desert for dinner, that is really all I ever did for my boys on Valentine's Day. As more and more boys were added to the family, the tradition slowly died out. And so I found myself wondering, what do I do for Valentine's Day this year? If you are in the same boat, fear not!! The day is not done. Try one of these ideas for a last minute Valentine Day surprise – and the ones that require a little more planning can always be tucked away for next year! 21 Ways To Spend Valentine's Day With Your Children 1. Surprise them with a special breakfast. Make it something gooey and sweet! After all, isn't that what this day is all about? Try some cinnamon rolls, monkey break, caramel rolls, muffins or scones. For an extra special treat, serve them cake for breakfast! 2. Give them a themed gift every year. Like I said, I did a pajama theme. But this can be anything. Maybe it's sports related, a game themed gift, bath related or a movie theme. The trick is to keep the same theme every year, but to find a different gift from year to year. 3. Give them a box of chocolate. A traditional touch, for sure. This makes a nice addition to any tradition. 4. Cook dinner together. Cooking dinner together is always fun for the little kids, but as your children get older, it becomes more of a chore. Make it fun by serving a yummy punch or pop, cranking up some music and joking around while you cook! 5. Have a candle light dinner. Younger kids love this one. They know there is something extra special going on when you dim the lights and light a candle. 6. Have a special dinner together. Maybe it's dinner out. Maybe it's a heart-shaped pizza. Or maybe you serve them their favorite pasta. Whatever it is, make it stand out. Serve some sparkling water or juice in a wine glass for kicks! 7. Make it a date night. Take your kids out for dinner and a movie. Or hit the bowling alley or the skating rink. Do something fun as a family. 8. Watch a movie together. Snuggle up together on the couch, pop some popcorn and put on that movie you've been meaning to sit down and watch. Make it a pajama party or slumber party to set it apart from any other movie night. 9. Play a board game together. Let them stay up late and play a game together. Serve some yummy snacks, a special drink and just have fun! 10. Camp out in their bedroom for the night. If you have older kids, play some video games with them until late in to the night. If your kids are younger, sleep on the floor in their room. Have a slumber party together! 11. Surprise them with a special delivery at school. Have some balloons, a cupcake, a flower or something special delivered to your child at school, in front of his or her classmates. 12. Take them out for lunch on their school lunch break. Have them excused over their lunch break and take them someplace special! 13. Have breakfast with them at school. If they eat breakfast at school in the morning, join them! If you can't make breakfast, you can always join them for lunch. 14. Take them away for the weekend. You may no longer be whisked away for a romantic weekend but you sure can kidnap your kids for a weekend away! Surprise them by picking them up from school and darting off for a fun-filled weekend of things they love. 15. Give them a journal you have kept for the past year. Start a journal in January, end it in December, and give it to them as a Valentine's Day gift. Fill the pages with letter of love, funny things they did, things you are proud of, or times you missed them throughout the year. 16. Create a scrapbook for them. There are so many ways to scrapbook now! Create a traditional scrapbook with paper and scissors, create one on-line with Shutterfly or Mixbook, create a book out of your FaceBook Wall or from your instagram account with Chatbook. 17. Have a school skip day and go somewhere fun instead. It's okay, I promise. If you know your child can easily make up the work, skip a day! Go have fun. Everyone deserves a mental health day. ;-) 18. Give them a homemade gift. If you have special talents, such as knitting, painting, making jewelry, etc., use it! Make something special for your child. 19. Visit someone who may be lonely on Valentine's Day. Not everyone is lucky enough to be surrounded by children on Valentine's Day. Take yours to visit someone who might be alone on Valentine's Day. The elderly would be a good place to start – they love little kids! 20. Bake a Valentine treat together. Make some cookies or a cake together. Surprise a loved one with the goodies! 21. Make a Valentine together. It could be any kind of craft or DIY project. Make it together and surprise someone you love with it! Have any more ideas? Share them!

As cool as they are, drones are a dime a dozen these days. If you're a drone manufacturer and you want your gizmos to stand out, they better have something special: compactness, a superb camera, affordability or, y'know, rockets. Drones from the Chinese company DJI seem to have all of the above, except the rockets, which is why they've been dominating the market for some time now. Their Mavic Pro is somewhat of a standard-setter for consumer drones, the Phantom 4 Pro challenges other companies to up their specifications game, and the Spark satisfies the needs of mobile users who want a portable drone. So, what is it that the DJI Mavic Air hopes to accomplish that the company hasn't already done? Look past the small size and you'll see impressive innards We've got plenty of praise for DJI drones here, but they're not all perfect. The Phantom Pro brings power, but at a prohibitive cost for some – this refers to both the price, which can go up to $1800, and the massive size. In contrast, the Spark's tradeoff in size and relative cheapness leaves some users wanting more range, flight time and a better camera. This left the Mavic Pro as the company's flagship model for all-purpose use. The Mavic Air clearly wants to overtake this spot, and it has everything needed to do so. The 6.2 x 2.7 x 2.7 inch size and 0.95 lb weight place it right between the Spark and the Mavic Pro. While the latter was already seen as a reasonably-sized drone, the Mavic Air is going to give users who need portability exactly that. Although the Spark gave up a lot of its recording power to shrink (with only a 2.1 MP, 30-FPS 1080p camera), the DJI Mavic Air makes no such sacrifices. Its ability to capture at 8.8 megapixels and 4K resolution places it right beside the Mavic Pro and the Phantom 4 Pro, and the camera's 1080p frame rate actually beats the Mavic Pro's by a significant margin (120 to 96 FPS). This brings a somewhat awkward question: where does the newest model leave the Mavic Pro? Yes, it has a range of 7000 meters compared to the Mavic Air's 4000, and much has been said about this. But how far are hobbyists really flying these drones? The truth is that most users won't find the extra range noteworthy, which doesn't make it much of a competition considering the Mavic Air's superior specs and $200 lower price. How does the DJI Mavic Air fare against its rivals? As noted, the Mavic Air has already beaten one of its major competitors, the Mavic Pro. This leaves the Parrot Bebop 2 and the Xiro Xplorer V as the drone's main competition outside the company. Bebop 2 and its kits remain a popular alternative to DJI and have no doubt taken their market share. One of the main perks is the price, which starts at $550 for the Bebop 2 versus $800 for the Mavic Air. However, many Parrot users find themselves needing to upgrade their drone with the FPV pack, which brings the cost to the Mavic Air's range. Once there, it's really not much of a contest – the Bebop 2's 1080p recording limitation makes the Mavic Air worth the extra money in almost every scenario, and its inability to avoid obstacles doesn't help its case. The Xiro Xplorer V's strongest point is its design. The thing looks straight out of a black budget project whereas most drones look clunky and tame by comparison. Although its camera options are similar to the Parrot Bebop 2 and therefore significantly lesser than the Mavic Air's, its looks and the $300 entry price tag will continue to make this an extremely popular acquisition for novice drone enthusiasts, albeit not with more serious users. The reviewers are in agreement: this is the drone to look out for Early reviews of the drone, including showcases of its tremendous camera, are pretty much what you would expect. TrustedReviews thinks this drone has what it takes to topple last year's best-buy, the DJI Mavic Pro, while Techradar calls it "the pocketable 4K drone you want in 2018". We'll go ahead and disagree with TrustedReviews a bit. To us, the Mavic Air has already toppled the Mavic Pro and then some – with a significant upgrade in every stat besides range, which it still has plenty of, the Mavic Air has everything it takes to leave DJI's current top pick in the previous year. It seems likely that this drone is going to widen the already-considerable gap between DJI and other manufacturers. The price remains less-than-ideal for some who are just looking to fly a drone around, but anyone wanting features will be ready to shell out $800 and not look back for a while. The only thing we can imagine raining down on the Mavic Air's parade would be debilitating faults with the drone, the likes of which we aren't used to from DJI, or an over-reliance on upgrades that would bring its price closer to $1000. That's the worst-case scenario, and we aren't willing to bet on it. The Vandoren Emerging Artist Competition (or VEA) is for clarinetists and saxophonists between the ages of 18 and 23 performing at the very highest technical and musical level. The 17 rare earth elements (REEs) are as diverse as they are challenging to pronounce. The group is made up of 15 lanthanides, plus yttrium and scandium, and each has different applications, pricing and supply and demand dynamics. Sound complicated? While the rare earths space is undeniably complex, many investors find it compelling and are interested in finding ways to get a foot in the door. Read on for a more in-depth look at the rare earths market and the many different REEs, plus a brief explanation of how to start investing in the sector. Rare earth elements market: Types of rare earths There are a number of ways to categorize and better understand REEs. For example, rare earths are often divided into “heavy” and “light” categories based on their atomic weight. Heavy rare earths are generally more sought after, but light REEs can of course be important too. Rare earths can also be grouped together according to how they are used. Those used to make magnet rare earths include praseodymium, neodymium, samarium and dysprosium, while phosphor rare earths — those used in lighting — include europium, terbium and yttrium. Cerium, lanthanum and gadolinium are sometimes included in the phosphor category as well. One thing that is common to all the rare earths is that price information is not readily available — like other critical metals, rare earths are not traded on a public exchange. That said, some research firms do make pricing details available on occasion, sometimes for a fee. Rare earth elements market: Supply and demand As mentioned, each REE has different pricing and supply and demand dynamics. However, there are definitely overarching supply and demand trends in the sector. Perhaps most notably, China accounts for the vast majority of the world’s rare earths supply. It produced 105,000 MT of rare earths in 2016, with Australia coming in a very distant second at 14,000 MT. The Chinese monopoly on rare earths production has created problems in the past. For instance, rare earths prices spiked in 2010 and 2011 when the country imposed export quotas. The move sparked a boom in exploration for rare earths outside of China, but many companies that entered the space at that time fell off the radar when rare earths prices eventually fell again. Molycorp (OTCMKTS:MCPIQ), once North America’s only producer of rare earths, is one notable failure in the drive to produce the metals outside of China. It filed for bankruptcy in 2015. China no longer has REE export quotas in place — in 2014 the World Trade Organization ruled against them, and China removed the restrictions in 2015. Despite its key role in the rare earths space, China has long had problems with illegal mining. As part of its 12th Five-year Plan, the country closed 14 illegal rare earths mines as well as 28 companies. The overhaul of the sector is expected to continue during the 13th Five-year Plan, which will run from 2016 to 2020. As part of its efforts to curb illegal rare earths mining, China announced at the end of 2016 that it would limit its annual rare earths output to 140,000 MT by 2020. In terms of demand, Adamas Intelligence, a rare metals research firm, notes in a recent report that the rare earths market has “endured a wealth of demand destruction” since 2011. In the five years since then, upwards of 30,000 MT of rare earth oxide demand were lost annually due to concerns from end users about supply security. That said, the firm believes demand for rare earths will boom from 2020 onwards as growth rates for top end-use categories, including electric vehicles and other high-tech applications, accelerate. Rare earth elements market: How to invest The possibility of higher rare earths prices in the coming years has left some investors wondering how they can invest in rare earths. Unfortunately, investors looking for exposure to REEs have few options — buying physical rare earths is not possible, and few ETFs offer exposure to the metals. For that reason, the easiest and most direct way to invest in rare earths is through mining and exploration companies. While many such companies are located in China and are not publicly traded, there are still some that are accessible. Here is a list of rare earths-focused companies trading on the TSX, TSXV and ASX; all had market caps of over $50 million as of April 6, 2017: Alkane Resources (ASX:ALK), Greenland Minerals and Energy (ASX:GGG), Hastings Technology Metals (ASX:HAS), Lynas (ASX:LYC), Midland Exploration (TSXV:MD), Northern Minerals (ASX:NTU), Peak Resources (ASX:PEK), Ucore Rare Metals (TSXV:UCU) and Wealth Minerals (TSXV:WML). Some small-cap REE companies are also listed on those exchanges. Professor Andreas Papatheodorou was born in Athens, Greece in 1974. Today he is Professor in Industrial and Spatial Economics with Emphasis on Tourism at the University of the Aegean, Greece. Previously he was the Dean of the London College of Hospitality and Tourism at the University of West London. He was an Associate Professor at the University of the Aegean and the Director of the Laboratory for Tourism Research and Studies at the same university. He holds appointments as an Adjunct at the National School of Public Administration, Greece and the Hellenic Open University, Greece. He has also served as an External Examiner at Cranfield University (MSc Programme in Air Transport Management) and University of Hertfordshire (BA Programmes in Business Administration, Tourism Management, joint degrees). Dr Papatheodorou commenced his academic career as a Lecturer in Tourism (permanent position) at the School of Management, University of Surrey, UK in year 2000. He stayed there until 2005 and subsequently became a Visiting Senior Fellow until 2008. Between 2005 and 2010, Andreas also served as an Honorary Research Fellow of the Tourism and Travel Research Institute at the Nottingham Business School, UK. In the past, Dr Papatheodorou was an Assistant Professor at the University of the Aegean (2005-11) and also held adjunct appointments at the Athens University of Economics and Business and Harokopeion University in Greece.
