Who Piled Before Us is a series that considers stones as markers in the karst landscape of Ireland. Archeological, medieval monuments consume the landscape with weathered stone structures marking cairns, or gravestones to unnamed deceased. In the modern era such structures become confused with natural occurrences or shifts in the earth as well as human interference to the land. Using the Historical Environment Viewer, I tracked registered memorials and landmarks within my immediate area as well as noted ones that I had discovered on foot. The combination of the realness of the tradition of marking sites with both classified records as well as newer structures questions current practices of cairns and natural statues within the backdrop of medieval history. All of the prints are platinum palladium photographs and shot with a large format camera.
