Schoolkids Has Purchased CD Alley, Will Change Names March 1 Posted by David Klein @DKleinandFall on Fri, Feb 12, 2016 at 5:08 PM Come March 1, CD Alley—the cozy, narrow Chapel Hill record shop that Ryan Richardson has owned and operated since 2006—will not be CD Alley. Schoolkids Records , which left Chapel Hill in 2008, will make its return to the college town at CD Alley’s West Franklin Street location. This will be the third Schoolkids. Several factors compelled Richardson’s decision. For one, the store’s ten-year term is coming to an end shortly, and he figured “ten years felt like the right amount of time.” The agreement with Judge arrived just in time. With Richardson starting accounting school in May, the store would have closed for good in the next few months, anyway. Salvaging CD Alley’s legacy—and bringing Schoolkids back to Chapel Hill—were important to Schoolkids owner Stephen Judge. “There’s a lot of history there,” he says. “I grew up in Rocky Mount. When I came up for Carolina football games with my friends, we would always stop by Schoolkids. It was just part of the ritual.” Eight years ago, as general manager at Redeye Distribution in Haw River, Judge fought strenuously to keep Schoolkids from leaving Chapel Hill, whether by himself or with the help of his employers at Yep Roc and Redeye. In the end, he felt it was too risky to take on by himself. When Richardson discussed wanting to sell CD Alley, he was determined to make it work this time. “It’s always something that stuck in my side,” he says. "This is me setting things right." The transition will be smooth and devoid of hoopla, says Judge, whose other Schoolkids locations are in Raleigh and Durham. There won’t even be any new signage. Initially, the only significant change that shoppers can expect will be less frequent sightings of Richardson at the front desk. But the store’s other staff will remain on board. Richardson came to the store as an employee in 2000 and bought it six years later. He never planned to do it forever. “I’ve known all along that I couldn’t do this for the rest of my career,” he says. “I was going to have to change tracks at some point. I felt like, if I was gonna go back to school, I’d better do I before I let too much more time get away from me.” While he says he still enjoys his work, Richardson admits it takes more and more to keep up. “If there was one thing I don’t enjoy about it as much anymore, it’s just trying to stay ahead of the curve. But all in all, it’s still a lot of fun,” he says. “If you could have told me I’d own a shop on Franklin Street for ten years, I’d say that sounds like a dream come true.”

Happy Valentine's Day!! When you become a mom, Valentine's Day takes on a whole other meaning. Suddenly, there is more than just one love in your life. And it is your job to honor that love. Other than baking heart-shaped cookies, and occasionally a desert for dinner, that is really all I ever did for my boys on Valentine's Day. As more and more boys were added to the family, the tradition slowly died out. And so I found myself wondering, what do I do for Valentine's Day this year? If you are in the same boat, fear not!! The day is not done. Try one of these ideas for a last minute Valentine Day surprise – and the ones that require a little more planning can always be tucked away for next year! 21 Ways To Spend Valentine's Day With Your Children 1. Surprise them with a special breakfast. Make it something gooey and sweet! After all, isn't that what this day is all about? Try some cinnamon rolls, monkey break, caramel rolls, muffins or scones. For an extra special treat, serve them cake for breakfast! 2. Give them a themed gift every year. Like I said, I did a pajama theme. But this can be anything. You may no longer be whisked away for a romantic weekend but you sure can kidnap your kids for a weekend away! Start a journal in January, end it in December, and give it to them as a Valentine's Day gift. Fill the pages with letter of love, funny things they did, things you are proud of, or times you missed them throughout the year. 16. Create a scrapbook for them. There are so many ways to scrapbook now! Create a traditional scrapbook with paper and scissors, create one on-line with Shutterfly or Mixbook, create a book out of your FaceBook Wall or from your instagram account with Chatbook. 17. Have a school skip day and go somewhere fun instead. It's okay, I promise. If you know your child can easily make up the work, skip a day! Go have fun. Everyone deserves a mental health day. ;-) 18. Give them a homemade gift. If you have special talents, such as knitting, painting, making jewelry, etc., use it! Make something special for your child. 19. Visit someone who may be lonely on Valentine's Day. Not everyone is lucky enough to be surrounded by children on Valentine's Day. Take yours to visit someone who might be alone on Valentine's Day. The elderly would be a good place to start – they love little kids! 20. Bake a Valentine treat together. Make some cookies or a cake together. Surprise a loved one with the goodies! 21. I really enjoyed the first two books of The Queen of the Tearling Trilogy and the way they married the feel of an epic fantasy novel with dystopian elements. I love Kelsea Raleigh--the way she's portrayed and her believable growth from altruistic young woman to someone who's willing to put aside their morals to do what needs to be done. There's a progressively dark feeling to these novels. I still love the setting. We remain in the world Johansen built, but its beginnings are fully fleshed out in The Fate of the Tearling. We get to see how their society used to be run and where everything went wrong. Seeing more of Mortmesne was particularly interesting. I have always enjoyed Johansen's ability to give you something you have a preconceived notion of and then tear it out from under you. She frequently makes you think of things in a new way, and the Mortmesne plot lines are a good example of that. I wasn't a fan of The Fate of the Tearling's storyline, however.. I liked where the story was heading when the second book ended but found myself frequently upset about how she navigated the plot in this book. I thought the Red Queen's redemption arc was completely off the wall. It felt so out of character for the villain we had come to know. I felt that they broke her, in a sense. She came off weak. I enjoyed learning more about Row. I liked that he was given a face and backstory, but the confrontation with him felt highly unsatisfying. I felt the narrative had difficulty carrying the multiple points of view from so many different characters. I found myself missing the rapport and witty banter between Kelsea and her guards. It took away a big part of what I enjoyed in previous books. I also felt there was too much of the dystopian element in this book. I liked getting answers and seeing a more complete history of the world, but I had such a hard time keeping track of everything that it was hard to enjoy the story. There were just too many varying points of view, and it made the narrative feel inconsistent. Another thing I disliked were the new developments in Kelsea and Pen's relationship. Although I don't require romance to enjoy a story, it's a big draw for me. I had liked where their relationship was heading, and the events of this book were frustrating with regards to them. The Fate of the Tearling left me wishing she had written a prequel instead, so I could have fully immersed myself in the characters and storylines I had come to love throughout the series. I detested the ending. It felt as though she took everything she had spent three entire books building and blew it all apart. I like that she had the courage to go in that direction but the narrative turn seemed weak. It felt like a cop out and I found myself a little confused, wondering what precisely had happened. I wish the series had ended with a little more hope. Perhaps that isn't realistic, but I don't really read fiction for realism. All in all, I did enjoy the book and it was largely well written. I just wish that the narrative had been more consistent, that more page time could have been dedicated to the storylines and characters of the present, and that the ending had been more satisfying.

I am a mother, a wife, and a photographer... in that order. ;) I love my family first and foremost. I am a jack of many trades, I love creating, everything - from beautiful images, to costumes, to yummy foods. I love my craft closet, (which is full of stuff I can use to make things for you session that will make it that much more interesting) I love my costume and prop collection, I love thrift stores and flea markets, and I love a good sale anywhere. I enjoy reading good long books as well as writing, (although life has seemed to push that pastime to the side for the most part) and I rarely ever watch TV. I enjoy the outdoors and sports, and when I get old I will be be an avid traveler. ;) The sky amazes me and I have recently began taking random photos of it (awesome for overlays)...., I would love to have a second house at the ocean. I have an obsession with dying my hair random colors dependent upon my mood, and lately am rarely seen without a bandana tied around my head. If asked about my favorite color, I would have to say that I love them all (which is reflected throughout the walls of my home) yet I always gravitate toward things that are black. I am inspired in one way or another by everything that I have ever seen or experienced. (good, bad, and ugly) I like to think that I am a very intelligent person, I have an extremely sarcastic sense of humor at times, and I truly enjoy people. I have a very good sense of style, although my clothing choices for myself may not always reflect that as I am often in a tank top and jeans. (That said, you will never catch me dead in "mom" jeans) I drive too fast, and love music....all genres, like in a "My name is Amanda and I must be schizophrenic due to my playlist" kind of way.... I am not a "professionally trained photographer" so I can show you no credentials aside from my portfolio, as I am completely self taught and expand on my creativity and knowledge whenever possible. I suppose we can call me an extremely passionate artist of the lens, eager to capture and create some fantastic images for you. We are each an unique work of art, I am here to make sure your portraits reflect just that. I can produce a perfectly beautiful image of you sooc (straight out of camera), although rarely will I ever be satisfied with leaving it at that. I would like to consider myself extremely versatile in the creativity department. I love to do themed shoots, and can create costumes as well as other items necessary to pull them off. I have an eye for location, and love and appreciate natural light and texture. I am slightly "edgy", and love to think outside of the box. While there is nothing "conservative" about my taste or personality, I am able to mold my creative juices to suit the situation. Thank you for visiting my website! My love for photography began as a child. I remember going to the National Museum of the Air Force when I was 9 or 10 years old. I spent every penny I had buying and shooting all the rolls of 110 film I could get my hands on. It took me weeks to save up enough to get them all developed (aahhh digital). I found the pictures again a few years ago. The pictures were nothing spectacular, but I'll never forget the rush I got taking them. Jump ahead to high school where I took my first photography class and learned about exposure, composure, and developing. After that I got away from serious photography until just a few years back. My father got a fancy new camera, a Nikon D90, and I had to have one too. I tried out a lot of lower grade equipment before learning the reasons why the pro grade stuff cost soooo much. There really is a huge difference in what you can do with it. But then I hit another wall. Even though my gear was good, I couldn't get all the shots I was trying for. My dad was having similar issues and we discovered a local photography school, Light Photographic Workshops. And the rest, as they say, is history. Not really, but I did learn how to fully use my camera and have continued to strive to be a better photographer ever since. I am fortunate to live in an area filled with great places to shoot, and to have friends and family that are so supportive of my work.

Kenardo Forbes opened the scoring in the 32nd minute for the Rhinos. Raul Gonzalez would score both his first goal for Richmond and his first professional goal to give the Kickers a point on the road. The home side would try to get on the attack early in the first half calling Matt Turner into action in the 4th minute. Stefan Defregger collected the ball out wide and found an opening to slot the ball through to Mike Garzi making the run into the box. Garzi would take a shot quickly, without much power on it, as Turner would make the save. Richmond would try to put together an attack in the 17th minute. After winning the ball in the midfield, Alex Lee feeds the ball up the wing and finds Alhaji Kamara making the run towards the corner. Kamara sent his cross in looking for Luiz Fernando making the near post run as Tomas Gomez needed to come out to meet the cross and prevent any chance from Fernando. The Rhinos nearly took a lead just two minutes later. Gomez plays the ball down field and finds Bradley Kamden Fewo in the corner. Kamden Fewo would get to the end line and play the ball across goal to Garzi on the far side. He could not get a shot off and laid it off to Forbes at the top of the box for a shot on goal that Turner is able to block. The rebound falls to Defregger and he slots it in, but the offside flag goes up negating the goal. Kenardo Forbes broke the deadlock in the 32nd minute for the Rhinos. Darius Madison controlled the ball at the top of the box, unable to turn because of multiple Kickers defenders. Forbes makes a run towards the box and Shanosky is nearly able to prevent it, but Forbes gets enough on the ball to play it off a sliding Turner and then easily put away the rebound towards the far side of goal. Just before the halftime break, Raul Gonzalez would put away a free kick to draw the Kickers level in the 45th minute. Samuel Asante collected the ball in the midfield and started to make a run towards the Rochester box, as Ryan Felix stuck his leg out to try and make a stop and ended up drawing a foul on Asante. Raul Gonzalez stepped up to take the free kick. A previous free kick by Gonzalez was lofted in looking for a near post run. This time Gonzalez put power on his free kick and snuck it in the near post past Gomez for his first professional goal. Two minutes into the second half, Rochester looked to get back into the lead through Mike Garzi. Jordan Dover played the ball out wide to Brandon Beresford. Beresford played his cross in finding Garzi at the top of the box. Garzi took a touch and then tried a shot on the volley and it went high of Turner’s goal causing no threat. Gonzalez had another chance on goal from a free kick in the 60th minute. This time it was Gonzalez that was fouled by Forbes in nearly the same spot as the first half goal. Gonzalez stepped up looking to create the same magic as his shot ended in the hands of Gomez in goal. The Rhinos tried to create another dangerous opportunity in the 63rd minute. Kenardo Forbes once again was in on the attack and played the ball to Kamden Fewo looking to get the ball back. Kamden Fewo instead turned his shot on target as Turner was there with the save. Rochester’s most dangerous opportunity of the second half came in the 73rd minute. Only on the field for five minutes, Antonio Correia was able to put a shot on frame after getting a pass from Sofiane Tergou out wide. Turner would block the initial shot as the ball fell to Madison. He would have a chance on goal that Troyer was able to get in front of to clear away. The Kickers continue their three-match road trip as they head to Toronto FC II Wednesday with an early kickoff at 12PM.
