Schoolkids Has Purchased CD Alley, Will Change Names March 1 Posted by David Klein @DKleinandFall on Fri, Feb 12, 2016 at 5:08 PM Come March 1, CD Alley—the cozy, narrow Chapel Hill record shop that Ryan Richardson has owned and operated since 2006—will not be CD Alley. Schoolkids Records , which left Chapel Hill in 2008, will make its return to the college town at CD Alley’s West Franklin Street location. This will be the third Schoolkids. Several factors compelled Richardson’s decision. For one, the store’s ten-year term is coming to an end shortly, and he figured “ten years felt like the right amount of time.” The agreement with Judge arrived just in time. With Richardson starting accounting school in May, the store would have closed for good in the next few months, anyway. Salvaging CD Alley’s legacy—and bringing Schoolkids back to Chapel Hill—were important to Schoolkids owner Stephen Judge. “There’s a lot of history there,” he says. “I grew up in Rocky Mount. When I came up for Carolina football games with my friends, we would always stop by Schoolkids. It was just part of the ritual.” Eight years ago, as general manager at Redeye Distribution in Haw River, Judge fought strenuously to keep Schoolkids from leaving Chapel Hill, whether by himself or with the help of his employers at Yep Roc and Redeye. In the end, he felt it was too risky to take on by himself. When Richardson discussed wanting to sell CD Alley, he was determined to make it work this time. “It’s always something that stuck in my side,” he says. "This is me setting things right." The transition will be smooth and devoid of hoopla, says Judge, whose other Schoolkids locations are in Raleigh and Durham. There won’t even be any new signage. Initially, the only significant change that shoppers can expect will be less frequent sightings of Richardson at the front desk. But the store’s other staff will remain on board. Richardson came to the store as an employee in 2000 and bought it six years later. He never planned to do it forever. “I’ve known all along that I couldn’t do this for the rest of my career,” he says. “I was going to have to change tracks at some point. I felt like, if I was gonna go back to school, I’d better do I before I let too much more time get away from me.” While he says he still enjoys his work, Richardson admits it takes more and more to keep up. “If there was one thing I don’t enjoy about it as much anymore, it’s just trying to stay ahead of the curve. But all in all, it’s still a lot of fun,” he says. “If you could have told me I’d own a shop on Franklin Street for ten years, I’d say that sounds like a dream come true.”

Caribmap is a resource for exploring historical map images of Caribbean islands. The site has evolved since 1999 and now presents images of ~1800 maps of the islands printed over five centuries (16th–20th). This is still a small sampling of the thousands of different maps that were printed. High resolution map images allow visitors to zoom in on details, including place names of historical and scientific importance. After selecting an island, all map images of that island appear in chronological order above the viewing area, and can be browsed. Clicking on a thumbnail loads the image into the larger viewing area and displays the map information at left. Once loaded, zooming in on the image is possible by controls that appear below the image viewing area. Masseria Moroseta was designed by Andrew Trotter, over a 3 year process, to delve into the heart of the traditions of Pugliese construction and building. Owner Carlo Lanzini, wanted a modern building that didn’t feel out of place within the olive trees. The masseria, built around the courtyard, with its entrance being the only opening on the frontal wall, a strong hold towards “the enemies”, giving no instruction to what is beyond. Once inside the court, there are three rooms on either side, which in the old days would have been the stables, with the living quarters in front, divided by a central staircase to the roof. To the left, as you approach the large window entrance to the living room, you glimpse your first sights of the olive trees, pool and the sea beyond. Traditional use of the local sand stone “tufo” has been used throughout, all rooms with a vaulted ceiling, and 80cm walls keep the building cool, even when there is 40 deg. C outside. The rooms to the left have high walled private gardens filled with orange trees, while the rooms to the right have private terraces with views across the olive grove. Dry stone walls elevate the building, to catch more of the view to the sea and the breeze, while making space below to hold the spa, gym and services. All the stones have been recycled from the land during the excavation of the building. A study was made of masserias of the area, and the comparison to modern, minimal architecture in their simplicity and use of local materials, that the end result is a piece of modern architecture that fits perfectly into the region, and belongs to the ground that it sits on. This is a modern day farm grounded in history.

Sherie M. Randolph is an associate professor of history and African American Studies at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Randolph’s book Florynce “Flo Kennedy: The Life of a Black Feminist Radical , published by the University of North Carolina Press (October 2015), examines the connections between the Black Power, civil rights, New Left and feminist movements. The former Associate Director of the Women’s Research & Resource Center at Spelman College, has received several grants and fellowships for her work, most recently being awarded fellowships from Emory University’s James Weldon Johnson Center and the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. Randolph teaches courses on social movements, black feminist theory, gender, race and incarceration, Black Power, African American history, and women’s history. During the 2015-2016 academic year, she is the Ella Baker Visiting Associate Professor of Black Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

I really enjoyed the first two books of The Queen of the Tearling Trilogy and the way they married the feel of an epic fantasy novel with dystopian elements. I love Kelsea Raleigh--the way she's portrayed and her believable growth from altruistic young woman to someone who's willing to put aside their morals to do what needs to be done. There's a progressively dark feeling to these novels. I still love the setting. We remain in the world Johansen built, but its beginnings are fully fleshed out in The Fate of the Tearling. We get to see how their society used to be run and where everything went wrong. Seeing more of Mortmesne was particularly interesting. I have always enjoyed Johansen's ability to give you something you have a preconceived notion of and then tear it out from under you. She frequently makes you think of things in a new way, and the Mortmesne plot lines are a good example of that. I wasn't a fan of The Fate of the Tearling's storyline, however.. I liked where the story was heading when the second book ended but found myself frequently upset about how she navigated the plot in this book. I thought the Red Queen's redemption arc was completely off the wall. It felt so out of character for the villain we had come to know. I felt that they broke her, in a sense. She came off weak. I enjoyed learning more about Row. I liked that he was given a face and backstory, but the confrontation with him felt highly unsatisfying. I felt the narrative had difficulty carrying the multiple points of view from so many different characters. I found myself missing the rapport and witty banter between Kelsea and her guards. It took away a big part of what I enjoyed in previous books. I also felt there was too much of the dystopian element in this book. I liked getting answers and seeing a more complete history of the world, but I had such a hard time keeping track of everything that it was hard to enjoy the story. There were just too many varying points of view, and it made the narrative feel inconsistent. Another thing I disliked were the new developments in Kelsea and Pen's relationship. Although I don't require romance to enjoy a story, it's a big draw for me. I had liked where their relationship was heading, and the events of this book were frustrating with regards to them. The Fate of the Tearling left me wishing she had written a prequel instead, so I could have fully immersed myself in the characters and storylines I had come to love throughout the series. I detested the ending. It felt as though she took everything she had spent three entire books building and blew it all apart. I like that she had the courage to go in that direction but the narrative turn seemed weak. It felt like a cop out and I found myself a little confused, wondering what precisely had happened. I wish the series had ended with a little more hope. Perhaps that isn't realistic, but I don't really read fiction for realism. All in all, I did enjoy the book and it was largely well written. I just wish that the narrative had been more consistent, that more page time could have been dedicated to the storylines and characters of the present, and that the ending had been more satisfying.
