Here, you'll find my CV, a contact form, and a bit about the work I do.  I don't consider myself an expert in all things, but maybe after almost ten years as a professor at a small liberal arts institution, I might have a bit to offer someone. So I'll blog a bit here too. I'm motivated to do so because when I started out, there was very little information available on best practices for women teaching in science departments at liberal arts institutions. There is so much great stuff there for advising women going to R1 institutions, but some of the advice falls flat for others (and can even result in a rescinded job offer). So, I'll use this blog to offer things I've learned on the tenure track and most importantly, invite others to weigh in.

A relationship is like a hot cup of coffee ... you have to keep it hot with a balance of sweetness and other flavors to keep it interesting and enjoyable. Every now and then, you add a dash of spice or two just to change it up a little. So much for sounding too cheesy. haha. But if you really think about it, relationships should be fun and sweet, with some little spice in between. If you lose that balance somewhere, the whole formula can go haywire. The secret is (as if there really is a secret, huh?) ... both parties should learn how to keep the whole mix as delicious as possible so that you can savor everything that comes with it. Because of changes in the “991” numbering system, Indiana State University will now use the terms “university ID number” and “university username,” instead of the term “student identification number.” An email sent from ISU Tuesday said that the change was effective immediately. According to the email, “The identification number formerly known as Sycamore ID Number or 991 is now the University ID Number. The username formerly known as Sycamore Username, Sycamore Login, Portal Login or Sycamore ID is now University Username.” The email stated that this is due to future university ID numbers that will begin to start with a prefix other than “991.” “There is a numbering algorithm in our systems that applies the University ID Number to each student as the student is admitted. Once we are ‘out of’ 991 numbers, the system will just begin to use 992 as the initial three characters of the University ID Number,” Dr. Lisa Spence, the associate vice president for academic affairs and chief information officer, said. Spence said that university ID numbers will begin with “992” in the future, so the university is working to address the change now. “We needed a change to address the fact that right now we all call them ‘991 numbers.’” Spence said. “Since we need to make this change, we decided that we should make it in the best way possible. So we realized that we should use this opportunity to agree on consistent terms, and then have an information campaign about it to help everyone get used to using these new terms. We really do hope that this alleviates some confusion about which thing a person is talking about when a student is visiting in an ISU office or talking with someone over the phone, or even when staff and/or faculty are working together.“ This change will affect both staff members and students. Alfred Vangilder, ISU sophomore majoring in recreation and sports management, said that as a desk manager he will have to get used to not asking for a 991 number because it could cause confusion among students. Dr. Lori Henson, assistant professor in the department of communication, said that the change will take some time getting used to. “It’s going to be a little bit of an adjustment to call it something else when I’m advising students,” Henson said. “When I’m advising students, I always say ‘what’s your 991?’ and I’ll probably have to get out of that habit, but that’s okay. I don’t expect it’ll make my job too complicated.” Some students don’t view the change as a big deal, but also think that the change will take time to get used to. Fatimah Aldawood, freshman public health sciences major, said that the change doesn’t really matter and wouldn’t affect operations on campus very much. Froy Vega, a sophomore business management major, said he believes that they’re doing what is necessary for future Sycamores, but thinks that the change could cause some confusion at times. The use of “991” has been around for about 16 years. “The 991 number has been in effect since the early 2000’s. This numbering scheme was developed in order to reduce the use of Social Security Number as a commonly-used identifier for most departments on campus, due to security and identity theft concerns related to Social Security Number that had emerged by that time,” Spence said.

When one of your children has cavities, you might feel as though you failed as a parent. Tooth decay is an ongoing problem for children and their parents. If you're like me, you do all you can to protect your children's teeth from decay. But sometimes, tooth decay sneaks up on you. About a year ago, my oldest child's back tooth developed decay. The cavity seemed small and insignificant at first, but it soon spread throughout the tooth. My child suffered tremendous pain. I finally sought a dentist's help. The dentist cleaned and filled the tooth so that my little one didn't lose it. The dentist also explained how my child developed a cavity and offered tips to prevent it from happening again in the future. I decided to offer other parents tips with my blog. Coach Tim Ward spoke about the journey. “The journey started back in January 2015 with our first state cup appearance. The girls were playing up a year, thus the challenge was a little above what they were capable of. However I truly feel that experience helped the girls coming into this years state cup. Since then the girls have given so much to their development. The focus and desire they have brought to every training session this year has been the key to their success.”

I really enjoyed the first two books of The Queen of the Tearling Trilogy and the way they married the feel of an epic fantasy novel with dystopian elements. I love Kelsea Raleigh--the way she's portrayed and her believable growth from altruistic young woman to someone who's willing to put aside their morals to do what needs to be done. There's a progressively dark feeling to these novels. I still love the setting. We remain in the world Johansen built, but its beginnings are fully fleshed out in The Fate of the Tearling. We get to see how their society used to be run and where everything went wrong. Seeing more of Mortmesne was particularly interesting. I have always enjoyed Johansen's ability to give you something you have a preconceived notion of and then tear it out from under you. She frequently makes you think of things in a new way, and the Mortmesne plot lines are a good example of that. I wasn't a fan of The Fate of the Tearling's storyline, however.. I liked where the story was heading when the second book ended but found myself frequently upset about how she navigated the plot in this book. I thought the Red Queen's redemption arc was completely off the wall. It felt so out of character for the villain we had come to know. I felt that they broke her, in a sense. She came off weak. I enjoyed learning more about Row. I liked that he was given a face and backstory, but the confrontation with him felt highly unsatisfying. I felt the narrative had difficulty carrying the multiple points of view from so many different characters. I found myself missing the rapport and witty banter between Kelsea and her guards. It took away a big part of what I enjoyed in previous books. I also felt there was too much of the dystopian element in this book. I liked getting answers and seeing a more complete history of the world, but I had such a hard time keeping track of everything that it was hard to enjoy the story. There were just too many varying points of view, and it made the narrative feel inconsistent. Another thing I disliked were the new developments in Kelsea and Pen's relationship. Although I don't require romance to enjoy a story, it's a big draw for me. I had liked where their relationship was heading, and the events of this book were frustrating with regards to them. The Fate of the Tearling left me wishing she had written a prequel instead, so I could have fully immersed myself in the characters and storylines I had come to love throughout the series. I detested the ending. It felt as though she took everything she had spent three entire books building and blew it all apart. I like that she had the courage to go in that direction but the narrative turn seemed weak. It felt like a cop out and I found myself a little confused, wondering what precisely had happened. I wish the series had ended with a little more hope. Perhaps that isn't realistic, but I don't really read fiction for realism. All in all, I did enjoy the book and it was largely well written. I just wish that the narrative had been more consistent, that more page time could have been dedicated to the storylines and characters of the present, and that the ending had been more satisfying.
